In 2006, I studied abroad in Japan for one year. Prior to moving I had always identified myself as a Japanese person. However upon arrival I quickly realized how generations of separation between you, and your motherland creates cultural separation.

The form of the quilt is symbolic in that, traditionally within Americana, a quilt can be passed down generationally. Each quadrant is representative of a generation associated with that generations textiles, phrases and geographic locations.

Beneath the corners are flaps that reveal a brief description particular to that generation. This flap references the act of unearthing a deeper story of ones past.
